Third Graders Attend Kids Fitness And Nutrition Day
The third graders of Potter-Dix Elementary attended the Seventh Anual Kids Fitness and Nutrition Day on Thursday,
October 13th, at the Cheyenne County Community Center and the National Gaurd Armory in Sidney. A total of
about 250 students were in attendance. Tis fun-filled day focused on promoting non-competetive physical activies
and hands-on nutritional education centers to help students develop a lifelong healthy lifestyle.
Potter-Dix students spent the morning at the armory learning about correct food portions, reading food labels, snack
alternatives, the relationship between exercise and burning calories, food groups, and washing hands to keep food clean.
One of the fun facts we learned was it takes about three minutes of running to burn off the calories of an apple, but about
seven minutes of running to burn off the calories of a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup! All students had fun running to burn
off their calories!
In the afternoon, our third graders participated in eight physical centers at the community center. These activities included
Stretch Bands, Tai Chi, Fit and Phat, Boot Camp, and Obstacle Course, Streaching, the Lily Pad Games, and Walking
with Pedometers. Third graders loved the Obstacle Course where they did jumping jacks, ran over a rope ladder, did
pushups, shot balls through basketball hoops and hula hoops, crawled throgh a tunnel, and did summersaults. They kept
busy having fun!
Everyone ate a healthy meal for lunch from Subway. Each student also recieved a backpack filled with healthy foods and
snacks at the end of the day. The third graders agreed that the workshop was a success as they had fun learning about the
connection between good nutrition, exercise, and their health!
The third graders would like to thank the many sponsors who made this workshop possible, including the Nebraska Beef
Counsil, Univesity of Nebraska of Kearney, the Panhandle Public Health District, Nebraska Panhandle Area Health
Education Center, Kids Plus INC, and the Cheyenne County Community Center. Their commitment to education and
makig education fun is greatly appreciated!
